Peaceful Summer (宁夏) by Fish Leong (梁静茹)
This song is a hit by the Malaysian-Chinese singer Fish Leong (Liang Jingru). Slightly strange choice of English name perhaps, but apparently she chose it because the pronunciation of the last character of her name sounds like ‘fish’ in Cantonese.
The song is about the hazy heat of summer, but also the feelings of being away from somebody. The lyrics are sung fairly slowly, so it’s a good song to learn.
Incidentally, the title of the song 宁夏 is also the name of a region in western China, but that’s got nothing to do with the song. The first character on its own means ‘quiet’ or ‘peaceful’ and the second character is part of the word for ‘summer’ (夏天).
Skip forward to about 1 minute 28 seconds in the video to find where the lyrics start.
As always, the lyrics are given karaoke style in traditional characters in the video, and in simplified characters, Pinyin and English below 🙂
níngjìng de xiàtiān
tiān kōng zhōng fán xīng diǎn diǎn
Dozens of stars twinkling in the sky
xīn lǐ tou yǒu xiē sī niàn
In my heart I’m missing you a little
sī niàn zhe nǐ de liǎn
missing your face
wǒ kě yǐ jiǎ zhuāng kàn bù jiàn
I can pretend that I can’t see it
yě kěyǐ tōu tōu de xiǎng niàn
or just miss you in secret
zhí dào ràng wǒ mō dào nǐ nà wēn nuǎn de liǎn
until I am able to touch your warm face
zhī liǎo yě shuì le
The cicadas are also asleep
ān xīn dì shuì le
zài wǒ xīn lǐ miàn
In my heart
níng jìng de xià tiān
A peaceful summer
nà shì gè níng jìng de xià tiān
That was a peaceful summer
nǐ lái dào níng xià dì nà yī tiān
The day you came into my peaceful summer
